Lecture Note Week 03:
In this week's lecture, we learned about "Chiaroscuro". This lecture is a great starting point for us to know the use of light and dark to create the illusion of three-dimensional volume on a flat surface.
Chiaroscuro: An Italian term,
which means "light-dark"
In paintings:
- Creates clear tonal contrast
Figure 3.2 Still Life with Fruit (Caravaggio)
- Increase the scene's dramatic tension - exaggerating the subjuct's importance using colour/light contrast.
- Tenebrism is a painting style from the Baroque period that uses strong contrasts between light and dark to create dramatic effects. It's characterized by its dark and gloomy atmosphere. Artists like Caravaggio and Rembrandt were known for using this technique in their artwork.
- Focus point or subject of a scene is brightly coloured or contrasted with a dark background.
- Low-Key lighting: Dimming the setting to emphasis natural/artificial lighting.
Figure 3.3 Barry Lyndon (Kubrick)
- Use lights to create emotional and impactful scenes.

Use in Visual Narrative :
- Is an excellent lighting choice to differentiate positive vs negative space.
- Positive space: Refers to subject matter or object if interest in a visual.
- Negative space: Refers to the filled space or background that surround subject matter or object of interest in visual.
- Use to increase dramatic tension.

WEEK 3: WEEKLY EXERCISE (CHIAROSCURO)
I started off by tracing a reference image of a pear given by Mr Hafiz
using the Pen Tool.
Then I used the Pencil Tool to create the shadows. Later on, I used Knife
Tool and Recolour to slice and change the colour of the pear.
Followed Mr Hafiz's guidance, traced skull reference image and used them
as shadows on my pear.
