Task 03:  Visual Analysis

After analysing the design of your choice in Task 2, you will now produce a work of design, inspired/influenced by the one you had analysed, or as a reaction to it. You should also apply your knowledge of design principles in your creation. You may use any medium and/or materials that are suitable to convey your visual message. Direct use of photographs is not permitted. Any work that is found plagiarised will result in an F grade for the overall module and the student will be subjected to the policies of the University concerning academic misconduct.

The blog must contain all the work done and completed for this module, along with a final reflection.

Requirement (Blog):
  1. Recap of Task 3 Brief.
  2. Visual references (cite the source) that inspire your own ideas
  3. 3-5 sketches (manual/digital) of your own ideas
  4. Final design in A4 size, JPEG
  5. A rationale, in about 150-200 words, explaining/defending the discussions made in your design, the meaning/purpose of the design and the design principles that are found in the design.
  6. Feedback from the lecturer.

2. TASK 03: DESIGN

2.1  Brief

After analysing the design of your choice in Task 2, you will now produce a work of design, inspired/influenced by the one you had analysed, or as a reaction to it. You should also apply your knowledge of design principles in your creation. You may use any medium and/or materials that are suitable to convey your visual message. Direct use of photographs is not permitted. Any work that is found plagiarised will result in an F grade for the overall module and the student will be subjected to the policies of the University concerning academic misconduct.

The blog must contain all the work done and completed for this module, along with a final reflection.

2.2  Visual Reference (Moodboard)

When I start up on the sketches, I decide to have a research on some reference image from Website and also get idea from Pinterest. In term of reference, I choose illustration arts about "Saving ocean" and "Save marine life". Besides, in deisgn, I have choose blue and green as the base as the main colour of the art.
I have also save those ideas inside my Pinterest Board: https://pin.it/1u6eMIMfY

2.3  Sketches

Based on the Module Information Booklet (MIB), we have to draw 3 to 5 sketches before we start our final design.

2.3.1  Sketch 01

Figure 2.1  Sketch 01
<Elegy of the Deep: Illustrating the Toll of Ocean Pollution>

This sketch is inspired by one of the references on moodboard (Figure 2.0) just now. This reference (Figure 2.0) draws a picture of whale stranding. I imagine marine life stranding at the beach to be because of Marine pollution, all kinds of Marine creatures have to be stranded on the beach in large numbers.

📌  Design principle: Movement, Repetition, Hamony and Unity.

2.3.2 Sketch 02 (Selected design)

Figure 2.2  Sketch 02
<The Plastic Monster's Revenge>

This sketch is inspired by one of the references on moodboard (Figure 2.0) above. This reference (Figure 2.0) shows a monster full with rubbish slowly walk to the beach and tried to land. By personifying the ocean's fury, the poster encourages viewers to recognize their role in perpetuating this environmental crisis and to take meaningful action.

📌  Design principle: Balance, Word and Image, Movement.

2.3.3 Sketch 03

Figure 2.3  Sketch 03
<Protecting Our Seas from Plastic Invasion>

This sketch is inspired by one of the references on moodboard (Figure 2.0) above. This reference (Figure 2.0) shows a human hugging the Earth. By juxtaposing the tender embrace with the urgent call to action, "save our planet," the message resonates deeply, highlighting the imperative to address pressing issues like plastic waste contaminating our oceans. It underscores the notion that safeguarding the Earth is not just a moral imperative but a collective duty. Through individual actions and concerted efforts, we can mitigate the devastating effects of ocean pollution and safeguard the delicate balance of marine ecosystems. This unified commitment to environmental preservation is encapsulated in the simple yet profound act of embracing the Earth, a powerful symbol of our shared responsibility to protect and cherish our planet for future generations.

📌  Design principle: Movement, Contrast, Word and Image.

2.6  Rationale

"The Plastic Monster's Revenge" educational poster aligns closely with UNSDG Goal 14: Life below water, which aims to conserve and sustainably use the oceans, seas, and marine resources. Through its powerful imagery and messaging, the poster sheds light on the detrimental impact of plastic pollution on marine ecosystems, directly addressing targets under Goal 14 such as reducing marine pollution and protecting marine and coastal ecosystems. I hope people who see this poster can have some awarenessof Marine Pollution. By depicting the ocean as a furious entity retaliating against human negligence, the poster underscores the urgency of addressing plastic waste in our oceans to safeguard marine life and habitats. Additionally, by encouraging viewers to reassess consumption habits, reduce single-use plastics, and advocate for policy changes, the poster promotes individual and collective actions essential for achieving Goal 14's objectives. Ultimately, by fostering awareness, dialogue, and a sense of responsibility, the poster contributes to advancing efforts towards a cleaner and healthier marine environment, in line with the aspirations of UNSDG Goal 14. In this educational poster, there are Movement, Balance, Word and Image, these design principle. Movement for the wave and the letter, Balance for the both sides are symmetric, Word and Image for the letter at the bottom of the poster.

3. FEEDBACK

Week 06
Specific Feedback:
  • Can proceed with the sketches (Figure 2.4), but need a little bit of changes at the proportion.
  • Mr. Zeon's advice was to combine the main elements of the whole sketch together.

✅ Have make changes on:
  • Have changes on the proportion and re-do the rejected sketches.
  • Have combine the sketches tgt but still not satisfied with the finished product.

Week 07
General Feedback:
  • Change "Reference link" to "Source link".
  • Should add "UNSDG goal" and "Design Principle" into the Rationale part.

Specific Feedback:
  • The whole picture should be slightly downward, because the whole picture now appears to be very focused on the top half.
  • Increase the shadow behind the Earth, so that the whole picture more three-dimensional and spatial sense.
  • Make the front closer to the wave above and then make the whole font into the shape of the wave.
  • Delete the bar, and then get some space out here.

✅ Have make changes on:
  • Have change "Reference link" to "Source link".
  • Have added "UNSDG Goal" and "Design Principle" into the Rationale part.
  • Have make changes on the 1st outcome.

4. REFLECTION

In this reflection, I will discuss my experience working on Design Principle, Task 03: Design. The assignment was designed to produce a work of design, inspired/influenced by the one you had analysed, or as a reaction to it. Throughout this reflection, I will analyze my approach to the assignment, reflect on what I learned, and consider areas for improvement.

For Task 03: Design, I was tasked with produce a work of design. To complete the assignment, I have draw several sketches before started up the digital part. During the process, I felt so confuse and complexity to start the task because of the multiple choices of outcomes that given by the task. At the begining of the task, I have no idea to complete it.

However, after research and feedback from teachers, I gradually know what works I want to present. I created this educational poster using Adobe Illustator (AI) technology that I learned in Illustration and Visual Narrative(IVN) last semester. Although there were several setbacks on the way, I also successfully completed my homework in the end. I am satisfied with the final product, because I think I have done my best to produce it.

Overall, It was a very interesting task. 👍

5. FURTHER READING

During this task, I have studied an article written by Rakesh Khumar, Anurag Verma, Arkajyoti Shome, Rama Sinha, Rama Sinha, Srishti Sinha, Prakash Kumar Jha, Ritesh Kumar, Pawan Kumar, Shubham, Shreyas Das, Prabhakar Sharma and P.V.Vara Prasad. This article was published on September 06, 2021. The tittle of the article is "Impacts of  Plastic Pollution on Ecosystem Services, Sustainable Development Goals, and Need to Focus on Circular Economy and Policy Interventions".

🔗 Source Link of the article: https://www.mdpi.com/2071-1050/13/17/9963

In the article, it talks about how plastic pollution is a big problem for the environment and people. It explains that we're making more and more plastic, and it's hurting nature, especially with tiny bits of plastic called microplastics. Even though we know this is bad, many places don't manage plastic waste properly, which can make people sick and harm animals. The article also shows how plastic pollution is connected to climate change and the goals for making the world better (SDGs). It says we urgently need to change how we deal with plastic waste, using methods that recycle or reuse it instead of just throwing it away. The article suggests some ideas for better policies and ways to involve everyone in finding solutions, like using less plastic and finding alternatives that are better for the environment.
