Stylised Design

  • Iconic - Think silhouette
  • Simplicity - Think purpose
  • Unique - Think memorable

Principles of Character Design

  • Shape
    • Design a character's silhouette to identify a character from one another.
    • (Ex) circles-friendly, squares-protagonists, triangles-unpredictable and aggreesive
Figure 2.2  Monster Inc

Figure 2.3  Aladdin, Character study

  • Colour
    • Sperate the basic characteristics roles (heroes, villains and background)
    • Colour psychology- Different colours give impressions of different emotions and is easily relatable by the viewer.

Figure 2.4  Different character in different colour in Inside Out

  • Emphasis, Contrast
    • Exaggerate and emphasis a character' s contrasting visual elements using colours and shapes.

Figure 2.5  Emphasis and Contrast in Inside Out

  • Harmony
    • Every elements in design should compliment each other.
    • All shapes, lines, colour, motifs, patterns must be put together in a tasteful manner.
    • Think visual hierarchy

Figure 2.6  Harmony in Inside Out

  • Expressions, Poses
    • Clear visualisation of the character's behaviours, quirks and personality make it easier to appeal to the audience.

Week 03

In this week's lecture, we learned about "Chiaroscuro". This lecture is a great starting point for us to know the use of light and dark to create the illusion of three-dimensional volume on a flat surface.
Chiaroscuro: An Italian term, which means "light-dark"

In paintings:

  • Creates clear tonal contrast
Figure 3.2  Still Life with Fruit (Caravaggio)

  • Increase the scene's dramatic tension - exaggerating the subjuct's importance using colour/light contrast.
  • Tenebrism is a painting style from the Baroque period that uses strong contrasts between light and dark to create dramatic effects. It's characterized by its dark and gloomy atmosphere. Artists like Caravaggio and Rembrandt were known for using this technique in their artwork.
  • Focus point or subject of a scene is brightly coloured or contrasted with a dark background.
  • Low-Key lighting: Dimming the setting to emphasis natural/artificial lighting.
Figure 3.3  Barry Lyndon (Kubrick)

  • Use lights to create emotional and impactful scenes.

Figure 3.5  Lights use to create impact scenes

Use in Visual Narrative :

  • Is an excellent lighting choice to differentiate positive vs negative space.
  • Positive space: Refers to subject matter or object if interest in a visual.
  • Negative space: Refers to the filled space or background that surround subject matter or object of interest in visual.
  • Use to increase dramatic tension.
Figure 3.6  Houseki No Kuni (Haruko Ichikawa)

  • Use to create snesational effect.
Figure 3.7  Batman (Bob Kane and Bill Finger)

  • Use to attract attention.

WEEKLY EXERCISE

Week 01

Figure 1.2  Bezier Game

Week 02

During tutorial seesion, we traced the shape in the template provided by Mr Hafiz using Adobe Illustrator.

Figure 2.8  Weekly Exercise, Vormator Tracing Exercise (Week 02)

Week 03

I started off by tracing a reference image of a pear given by Mr Hafiz using the Pen Tool.
Then I used the Pencil Tool to create the shadows. Later on, I used Knife Tool and Recolour to slice and change the colour of the pear.

Followed Mr Hafiz's guidance, traced skull reference image and used them as shadows on my pear.

Week 04

This week, we're gonna learned "Colour and Blending"
I traced the reference image provided by Mr Hafiz at Google Classroom.
I created the line and shadow usign the Pen and Pencil Tool.

Figure 4.1  Image use to traced provided by Mr Hafiz

Figure 4.2  Traced the reference image using Pen Tool at Adobe Illustrator

I use 4 different colour (Red, Blue, Purple and Green)to represent to line part and shadow part.
This is for me to classify the line  easily and quicky.

Figure 4.3  Finnish tracing and creating the shadow (line)

And then I apply shadow on to the traced people.

Figure 4.4  A guy with shadow

After that, I find some background (watercolour texture) from Freepik website to apply a clipping mask over the shadows I had created.

TASK 01

1. Exercise 01: Vormator Challenge

Instruction: Create a unique character using a limited set of shapes.

Research
I started off by looking for inspiration and idea on Pinterest.
I noticed that there is a character from a MOBA game called Omyoji. Inside this game, there is a character called 千姬

2. Exercise 02: Game Card Design

Mr Fauzi provided us some game card templates but I choose this as my game card design template.

Figure 4.5  Game card template

Later on, I found a backgorund that match my character design on website to let the game card look more attractive.

Figure 4.6  Background photo for the game card

I also has adjusted the colour saturation and add filter on the background and my character design. This is because the background is likely under the sea so the lighting should be darker. This is the final outcome of my game card design.

Figure 4.7  First outcome of Game Card design

Howerver, during Week 6, Mr Hafiz said that we need to draw our backround (game card) of ourself.
So, I try to make a new background using Adobe Illustrator.

Figure 4.8  Final Outcome of Game Card design

Compare to the first one, it maybe look not that nicer. But, this is the best work that I can give right now.

REFLECTION

I am very happy to get to know such an interesting assignment. Through this assignment, I can not only exercise my imagination, but also get familiar with the application of software such as Adobe Illustrator and Adobe Photoshop. Through the application of the software, I successfully completed my project, and I am very satisfied with the result of this project.
