Design Principles - Lecture 02: Topic 02 (Balance and Emphasis)
Lecture Note:
1.0 Principle of Design - Balance
🌟 Balance is the distribution of visual weight in design, achieved through the arangement of objects, colours, texture, and space. It can be symmetrical, where both sides are similar, asymmetrical, where they are different but still balanced, or radial, where elements are arranged around a central point.1.1 Balance
- Visual weight distribution in design refers to how elements are arranged to create a sense of balance and hierarchy.
- Visual equilibrium creates a balanced appearance in an image.
- Symmetrical or asymmetrical.
- Symmetrical Balance
- Balanced on both sides of a central fulcrum.
- Bilateral balance: Elements arranged equally around a central point.
- Radial balance: Elements aranged equally around a central point.
- Approximate symmetry: Equivalent but not identical forms are arranged around the fulcrum line.
Figure 1.0,1.1&1.2 Symmetrical Balance
- Asymmetrical Balance
- Uneven weight distribution in the composition.
- Balance composition with dominant and lesser focal points on each side.
- Elicits modern, energetic, and vitallistic feelings.
- Offers visual variety but can be challenging to achieve due to complex relationships between elements.

- The Golden Ratio
- Is a mathematical concept.
- Representative of perfect beauty.
- A guide to create visual balance in architecture and paintings.
- Used to bring harmony, balance and structure to one's work.
Figure 1.6 The Golden Ratio
- Rule of Thirds
- A composition guideline to create more dynamism to a work of design/photography/film/painting.
- Divided evenly into thirds.

2.0 Principle of Design - Emphasis
🌟 Emphasis is an area or object in artwork that draws attention and becomes aa focal point.
2.1 Emphasis
- Emphasis used to create dominance and focus in a design work.
- Various elements can used to create emphasis (Colour, shapes or value) to achieve dominances.
