Design Principles - Lecture 06: Topic 06 (Visual Analysis)
Lecture Note:
1.0 Visual Analysis
- A method of understanding design that focuses on the visual elements and principles.
- Great writing produces effective content.
- Great writing help us imagine future scenarios.
- Great writing communicates with clarity and impact.
1.1 How does visual analysis work?
- Phase 1: Observation
- Closely looking at and identifying the visual elements of a design.
- Do not read beforehand about the design at all.
- Looking, thinking and finding good language to communicate what you notice.
- Phase 2: Analysis
- Think about your observations and try to make statements about the work based on the evidence of your observations.
- How visual elements that combine to create design principles that complete the work of design/art, and the effects on the viewer.
- How and why (Apply the design principles knowledge that have learnt).
- Phase 3: Interpretation
- Observations, description and analysis of the work are fused with facts about the design work and historical context that you find in trustworthy published sources.
- What is the meaning of the design? What was the purpose for it to be created?
EXAMPLE:
Figure 1.0 An example of a chosen design
Lille International Tattoo Convention 2020 Calendar Poster
Designers: KBN Sensibilitey and Roman Kaan
Lille Grand Palais, France.
Phase 1: Observation
- Potrait format
- In the centre, there is a face looking at the viewer.
- A snake with its mouth open is surrounding the face.
- At bottom right, the person's hand is holding the snake.
- The image is surrounded by flowers with some words at the top and numbers to the right.
- Main colours observed: red, magenta, green and yellow.
- Swirly and organic lines applied throughout the composition.
- The border is created by thick black lines.
Phase 2: Analysis
- Symmetrical balanced.
- Emphasis - The face of the womaan (Rendered in the brightest hue, looking back at the viewer).
- Movement - The snake's coiling body lead one to read the words t the top.
- 3 set of number aligned at the right.
- A repetition of flowers and leaves is found from the middle to the bottom of the design.
- Unity - Composition as the objects are arranged in a way that complement one another.
- Proportion in the layout, creating hieraarchy (image in biggest size follow by the smaller words).
